The timid batting of Pakistan's cricket team has left the country’s former cricketers and fans furious after rival India snatched a thrilling six-run win in the marquee game at the Twenty20 World Cup in New York. A second successive loss in Group A left Pakistan in danger of not advancing to the Super 8 stage of the tournament being jointly hosted by the U.S. and the West Indies. The United States is playing at the World Cup for first time. It made history last week when it beat Pakistan in a Super Over after both teams were locked at 159 during the regulation 20-overs game. Only two teams from each of the four groups advance to the second stage. So Pakistan needs to win its remaining games against Canada and Ireland and also hope results of other group games go in its favor.

Three Valencia fans have been handed eight-month prison sentences after pleading guilty to racially insulting Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior. It is the first conviction for racism-related cases in professional soccer in Spain. The fans won’t be allowed to enter soccer stadiums for two years and will have to pay for all the court proceedings. The fans were detained after a Spanish league match between Real Madrid and Valencia at Mestalla Stadium in May 2023. The match was briefly stopped after Vinícius was insulted. Valencia had already banned the fans from Mestalla.

Jannik Sinner has moved up to No. 1 in the ATP rankings for the first time. He moves up one spot to replace the injured Novak Djokovic at the top. The 22-year-old Sinner is the first player from Italy to reach No. 1 since the computerized rankings began in 1973. He will be the top-seeded man at Wimbledon, where play begins July 1. Sinner is 33-3 this season with three titles, including earning his first Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open in January. French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz is No. 2, with Djokovic at No. 3. Iga Swiatek’s third consecutive championship at Roland Garros allowed her to increase what already was a large lead at No. 1 in the WTA rankings. Coco Gauff is No. 2.

Manny Pacquiao says that a title fight against Mario Barrios is in the works, with details still being ironed out. Pacquiao is a former world champion who retired in 2021. He spoke in Japan to promote a three-round exhibition on July 28 against Japanese MMA fighter Chihiro Suzuki. Pacquiao says the fight is "still in under negotiation,” He hinted any eventual fight would be in November or December. But he said his mind was only on Suzuki.

Ryan Christenson has turned lineup cards into art. The San Francisco Giants bench coach uses calligraphy for flamboyant lineup cards, impressing players so much they have him draw art on milestone balls and bats. The 50-year-old former outfielder never studied penmanship. After Giants manager Bob Melvin picks a batting order, Christenson selects the font and color scheme for the day’s sumptuous script. Options include Roman Gothic, Celtic variations, Chicano Tattoo and graffiti. He employs the Phillies’ Scriptwurst font for games against Philadelphia and imitates the style of the interlocking “NY” monogram’s type when playing the Yankees.

Shohei Ohtani won American League MVP honors unanimously twice in the past three years. It’s looking like a more wide open race in 2024. Ohtani is in the National League now, and the door is open for a handful of other AL candidates who are off to terrific starts. One of them is Aaron Judge. He won the award in 2022 by hitting 62 homers. He’s the only player besides Ohtani who has even received a first-place vote for AL MVP since 2021. Juan Soto, Gunnar Henderson and Bobby Witt Jr. are also in the MVP picture early on.

Sure, Edmonton’s Corey Perry is in the Stanley Cup Final for a fourth time in five years, but he lost his three previous trips. Florida’s Carter Verhaeghe is there for a third time in that span and has a ring to show for it, from 2020 as a rookie with Tampa Bay. It’s no coincidence he keeps scoring big goals for the Panthers, and he appreciates each one because of his long road to even reach the NHL. He got one of them in the opener against the Oilers that put Florida three wins from a championship.

Carlos Alcaraz plans to continue his tradition of celebrating Grand Slam titles with tattoos by getting ink of the date he won his first French Open championship and a drawing of the Eiffel Tower. That art will go near his right ankle to help him remember Sunday’s 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 comeback against Alexander Zverev in the final at Roland Garros. His right ankle already bears the date of his 2023 Wimbledon triumph. His left arm carries the date of his first major trophy at the 2022 U.S. Open. At the rate he’s going, who knows how many such achievements the 21-year-old from Spain might accumulate. His title defense at the All England Club begins July 1.

Game 2 provided Dallas with a huge chance. The Mavericks could have flown back to Dallas with the home-court advantage in the NBA Finals. They could have tied the title series at a game apiece. They could have put the heavily favored Boston Celtics into what would have been their most precarious spot of the season. Instead, they’re down 2-0 and now the odds of pulling this off just got a whole lot longer.

Argentinian driver Agustín Canapino’s future in IndyCar is unclear after his team pulled him from Road America shortly before the first practice of the weekend. Juncos Hollinger Racing didn’t believe Canapino was focused enough to race in the fallout of his third social media firestorm in a year. The team hasn’t said if Canapino will be back in the No. 78 Chevrolet when IndyCar resumes at Laguna Seca in California later this month.

Leon Marchand has been determined since his sixth-place finish in the 400-meter individual medley at the Tokyo Olympics to leave his mark on the Paris Games at home in France. With family, friends and an entire nation watching, the individual medley specialist is poised to be one of the faces of the Paris Olympics. Hardly the imposing physical specimen of Michael Phelps or 6-foot-5 Australian star Ian Thorpe, the 170-pound Marchand moved across the world to work with Phelps' longtime coach, Bob Bowman, at Arizona State. They recently won the program's first NCAA title.

The European Championship in Germany is all about tried and tested stadiums with a rich soccer history. Unlike at some recent World Cups, there’s been no rush to finish stadiums on time. All but one of Germany’s 10 venues hosted games at the 2006 World Cup and none have undergone major changes. Here is a guide to the 10 stadiums and all of the games taking place at each.
