How to use a Pie Iron / Pie Cooker

Ok, let’s get to the food! I loved that I was able to prep SO much at home for these meals! First, lets talk pie iron basics.. you need two slices of bread for each pie and the bread should be larger than the iron. Butter one side of each slice of bread {that side will go against the iron.}

Put your toppings on that slice of bread and then top with the other slice, butter side up {again towards the iron} Make your sandwich as desired {lots of ideas below!} and place in pie iron. Trim excess bread from edges.

Place in fire over coals, cook on one side, then turn and cook on the other. You can buy pie irons online at Amazon or in stores in the camping section. Some are too thin and the pies burn easily, so get a decent one. You will want to check your bread frequently to prevent burning while you get the hang of cooking with a pie cooker.

However, if you really want to only use pie cookers, you could cook the bacon in one half just like I do the eggs.

To prep the ingredients cook the bacon {at home or over the fire} and cook one egg in each side of your pie iron. Make sure to put lots of butter in the iron first, add the egg, give a little mix, then cook over the fire until firm.

FAQs

Can you use puff pastry in a pie iron? ›

This is my personal favorite thing to make in pie irons. I use puff pastry but you can also use bread or croissant dough. I simply add canned pie filling and that is it!

What do you grease a pie iron with? ›

You season our irons with a high heat oil (not low burn oils such as olive) as one would season a cast iron skillet. Canola oil is probably the most popular choice for sessoning, however we love the cast iron Pie Iron seasoning oil that Lovett Sundries makes for us.

How long do you leave a pie iron in the fire? ›

Cook over coals for 20 to 25 minutes, flipping the pie iron over every five minutes. Remove from the fire. Open the pie iron and check for doneness. Meat should be nicely browned on both sides and cooked through.

Do pie irons need to be seasoned? ›

If you buy your pie irons new, make sure that you season them well to create a nonstick surface and prevent rust. You can season them just like you would any cast iron pan: with repeated oiling and baking over an open campfire or grill. That way, none of your camp snacks will stick to the pans.

Do you cook puff pastry before filling pie? ›

Blind baking is the process of cooking a pie crust or pastry case on its own before you add the filling to ensure there's a crispy, crusty bake. When you make a pie with a filling that has a high liquid content, this step is usually required so that the crust can maintain its crumbly texture throughout the bake.

Can you put parchment paper in a pie iron? ›

You'll want to start by cutting your parchment to be just smaller than the size if your pie iron. If the parchment is outside the pie iron, it will catch fire, and you definitely don't want that. You'll need two pieces of parchment for each cookie you want to make.

Do you preheat pie iron? ›

Preheating Suggestions: Lay your empty pie iron in the hot coals of your campfire for a couple of minutes to preheat. Always exercise caution when handling pie irons, especially around kids.

Do you spray oil on pie maker? ›

Do I need to grease the pie maker? It is good practice to put a light coating of oil or butter in pie maker before putting your pastry. This helps to create a crispy pie, similar to those in bakeries. To do this you can use a paper towel to evenly spread the oil or butter or if you prefer, use an oil spray.

How do you season a new pie iron? ›

To season the irons would be the same as any other cast iron rub some vegetable oil on heat until about 300 for about 20 minutes.

Can you use a pie iron on a gas stove? ›

Models with shorter handles can also be used on the stovetop, especially if you have a gas range. However, even electric stoves work well with pie irons.

Can you bake a pie in enameled cast iron? ›

For a more casual approach, try making your next pie in an enameled cast iron skillet.

How do you cook in a pie iron? ›

Hold your pie iron flat when cooking (so the seam is parallel to the ground) and flip it occasionally. This will help it cook evenly and prevent the filling from seeping out. Pie irons will be very hot coming out of the fire, so take extra care if you're making multiple sandwiches.

Can you use puff pastry instead of pie crust for pie? ›

I normally use my traditional pie crust with this filling (sometimes with brown butter) but I HAD to try it with puff pastry. Turns out, it's amazing. The high butter content in puff pastry makes this crust melt in your mouth. Not to mention, I think it's stunning.

Will puff pastry work as a pie crust? ›

Both pastries are fantastic for making delicious pies - but I would always recommend using shortcrust for your pastry bottom, and puff or rough puff for the top. This will give you a nice crisp bottom which is sturdy enough to hold a filling as well as a lovely flaky top which has the wow factor!

Can you use puff pastry to line a pie? ›

If you want to make a puff pastry base for your pie

As you warm up your oven, put a baking tray in to heat up. Then when you put your pie in the oven, sit the dish on top of the hot baking tray. I find that this really helps to cook the base of the Steak Pie and stop a soggy bottom.

Is puff pastry the same as pie crust pastry? ›

What's the difference between pie crust and puff pastry? Pie crust is a type of pastry dough made with flour, fat (usually butter, lard or shortening), and water. It's used as a base for pies, tarts, and quiches. Puff pastry is a type of light, flaky pastry dough made with flour, fat (usually butter), salt and water.
